It has been a while since I last updated my blog. Work has taken toll on my time the past month.

Well anyway, this photo of a signage which i found in the MAS Kompleks B compound during my visit there a while ago.

Learnings:

1. Parking = Memakir

2. Clamped = Ketip

3. Either my Malay is bad or the person doing the signage punya language is bad :)

Clean the toilet or mind of the user?

It is official! Now we have 'few' clean toilets scattering all over KL, but just a few? And for that, do we really need to have DPM to officially launch it?

It is a fact of life that when nature call, we don't really bother if the toilet is equipped with a touch-screen panel to flush it or it is just an ordinary ones with a wooden lever attached to it, we just need a damn clean toilet, and of course, with plenty of water inside the tank!! (as part of Risk Management Process - Do make it a habit to 'test' it first! you might upset the next viewer / user!) Hence, the million dollar question is - after the introduction of those 'high-level' toilets, will our 'Public-Toilet Satisfaction Index' improves?

In coming out with the numbers, will the sampling being done only in Bukit Bintang or the survey will be extended to areas just beside Bukit Bintang?

The issue here is not 'dollars and cents' but 'civic-minded and common senses', that is what we should be tackling apart from building more clean toilets. Do we have a clear framework and blueprint on how to 'whitewash' those 'dirty-minded' users or we only have a roadmap on when will be the next launching dates?

Think about this... Which one is a more powerful adage? A ' first impression of a beautiful toilet last forever.. ' or 'Experience is not the best teacher... It is the ONLY teacher'. Unfortunately, in your case, it was a BAD experience when you frantically searching high and low for a toilet and finally being rewarded with...* you don't need to second guessing it, your guess is as guess as mine on what actually happened there!!*

Di Manakah Parti Politik Sewaktu Bencana?

Sesungguhnya banjir yang melanda negara pada bulan Disember yang lalu telah memberikan banyak pengajaran kepada kita semua, baik kerajaan, NGO, parti politik mahupun individu. Banjir kali kedua yang melanda Johor dan Pahang sekarang ini lebih teruk lagi. Alhamdulillah, segala persiapan untuk menghadapi banjir ini berjalan dengan baik. Semua agensi kerajaan yang bertanggungjawab dilaporkan bergerak sebagai satu pasukan untuk memastikan keperitan yang dihadapi mangsa banjir dapat dikurangkan. Mangsa-mangsa banjir dapat dipindahkan ke pusat-pusat pemindahan dengan segera dan sistem amaran banjir dan bencana berjalan dengan keadaan yang memuaskan.

Walaupun begitu, satu persoalan timbul. Di ambang pilihanraya kecil di kawasan Batu Talam, Pahang, parti-parti politik sibuk mempersiapkan jentera pilihanraya di kawasan tersebut. Kita melihat Pengerusi Badan Perhubungan UMNO dan Ketua-Ketua Parti Komponen Barisan Nasional beberapa negeri membuat pengumuman untuk menggerakkan jentera pilihanraya mereka untuk ke Batu Talam. Tetapi, dimanakah mereka dalam keadaan krisis bencana ini?

YB Menteri Pembangunan Wanita, Keluarga & Masyarakat dalam tempoh beberapa hari ini juga mengeluh bahawa jentera kerajaan yang ada tidak mencukupi untuk menghadapi banjir yang sedia ada. Saya diberitahu bahawa beberapa NGO telah dan sedang bergiat aktif untuk membantu mangsa banjir di Johor & Pahang. Pelajar-Pelajar IPT juga dengan sukarela telah menampilkan diri untuk menghulurkan bantuan.

Alangkah moleknya jika Parti-Parti Politik, samada Barisan Nasional ataupun PAS, KeADILan, DAP dan sebagainya menumpukan usaha mereka untuk membantu mangsa banjir? Jika pihak UMNO boleh menggerakkan lebih 50,000 orang daripada Pergerakan Wanita, Pemuda, Putera dan Puteri UMNO untuk ke Batu Talam, mengapakah mereka tidak dapat menggerakkan jentera yang lebih daripada 3 Juta orang ke Johor dan Pahang. UMNO, sebagai parti politik terbesar di dalam Malaysia sepatutnya menjadi contoh dan merintis serta memacu semua parti politik di dalam negara untuk membantu mangsa banjir. Parti-parti politik di dalam negara seharusnya mengetepikan fahaman politik masing-masing di dalam saat-saat getir ini.

Bukankan lebih memanfaatkan rakyat dan pengundi jika parti-parti politik ini menumpukan usaha untuk membantu mangsa bencana daripada sibuk dengan strategi menawan Batu Talam? Adakah parti politik negara kita ini telah terpesong dari matlamat asalnya?

Saya berharap agar YAB Presiden UMNO, Timbalan Presiden UMNO, Ahli-Ahli Majlis Tertinggi, Ketua-Ketua dan Ahli EXCO Pergerakan Wanita, Pemuda & Puteri UMNO menumpukan segala usaha untuk meringankan beban mangsa banjir. Saya menyeru agar semua parti politik di dalam negara kita ini untuk menggerakkan segala jentera yang ada untuk meringankan mangsa banjir. Walaupun, bantuan kewangan amat diperlukan di kawasan-kawasan tersebut, tetapi apa yang lebih penting adalah kerahan tenaga yang ada.

VISIT MALAYSIA YEAR 2007

CELEBRATING 50 YEARS OF NATIONHOOD

As I was driving along the roads near my home, I noticed a lot of roadside buntings. It reads "Visit Malaysia Year 2007 - Celebrating 50 Years of Nationhood". And as I was reading the newspapers this morning, I felt very sad and embarrassed, by the fact that on the 1st day of Visit Malaysia Year, we had numerous complaints by foreign tourists. They were clearly unhappy with the services provided by certain quarters around the city.

I was shocked to learn of the screw up at the Penang International Airport. They were supposed to upgrade the airport and be ready for VMY2007, but instead, its only going to be ready at the end of VMY2007 and some works will only be ready in 2008. How humiliating can that be?

I was also observing last week at KLCC that cabbies are not using meters, for locals hailing a cab and foreign tourists. This is bad... very bad. I saw cabbies were negociating with Tourists on the rates. I think the authorities should look at this matter seriously as it could very much damage the country's reputation.

Despite that, I am sure that we as Malaysians, will welcome foreign and local tourists alike, with our good hospitality and great culture and heritage. Please be reminded, that we Malaysians are also tourists and we have every right to be treated like tourists. I also look forward to more Cuti-Cuti Malaysia in 2007 :)

What kinda shocked me was an advertisement i saw on page 3 of a leading malay daily. Rayakan 50 Tahun Merdeka bersama Kementerian Penerangan - Konsert Mega Merdeka, Siaran Langsung Perarakan Merdeka, Riak-Riak Merdeka, Pesta Bola Merdeka and some others.

Katanya kita ni ISLAM HADHARI, tapinya, aktivitinya tak mari-mari lagi... Ini sedikit nasihat buat Kerajaan Malaysia yang ku hormati. Apalah salahnya, kita iklankan - Majlis Bacaan Yaasin & Tahlil untuk pejuang-pejuang Kemerdekaan dan Majlis Bacaan Yaasin untuk Kesyukuran Menyambut 50 Tahun Merdeka. Itu lebih baik daripada mempromosikan Konsert lah, Simfoni lah dan lain-lain lagi.

How does the Government intend to reflect ISLAM HADHARI in its policies and programs? Or is ISLAM HADHARI just another White Elephant Policy? We have been hearing about this for so long.... and yet not much have been done by the Government on ISLAM HADHARI... Takkan lah setakat Kempen Islam Hadhari Terengganu Bistari sahaja?

I am sure that more can be done by the government, not only to promote, but to practice and walk the talk on ISLAM HADHARI. And I think, 2007 is the best year to do it. While the worlds eyes is on Malaysia and foreign tourists are flocking the country, We can show them how dinamic our country is, living harmoniusly amongst different culture, religion and beliefs. Its an excellent platform to show how a progressive Islamic State manages its polulation and economy. Lets us reflect that Muslim are not terrorists, in fact we are fair, kind and loving people, which the Al-Quran & Sunnah has taught us.

NEWS - 27 December

Nazri: Public was warned of possible floods

KUALA LUMPUR: The public had been warned of a possible flood in Johor on Dec 15 and Dec 16, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Mohamed Nazri Abdul Aziz said.

Nazri denied claims by some in the flood-stricken areas that they had no advance warning of the floods.

“The public was informed on Dec 15 and Dec 16,” he told reporters after launching a seminar and exhibition in conjunction with the Disaster Awareness Day anniversary at the Putra World Trade Centre here yesterday.

He was asked to comment on public complaints that the people were not informed about the possibility of floods via the media.

“We knew about it in advance. We went down to the ground to inform the people about the rising waters and advised them to evacuate.

“Unfortunately, there were some people who were reluctant to leave their homes although the water level was one foot high. They took the matter lightly,” he said.

“And it happened too fast. We did not have time to inform the Information Ministry because we were focusing on rescue efforts.

BELOW ARE MY COMMENTS & OBSERVATIONS

I would like to ask the Government;

1. Why is the Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (in-charge of Parliment) is making such a comment?

2. Where is the Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation? MOSTI is in-charge of the Malaysian MET Service.

3. Where is the Chairman of the National Disaster Committee, Dato Seri Najib Tun Razak?

4. Why can't these Ministers make a statement? Why does the Government need to have a Minister in charge of Parliment to make statements that does not concern Parliment?

I have made some investigations to the statement made by Nazri that the Government went to the ground to inform the rakyat that there are floods coming. Fact is, there were no announcements made on the 1st wave of floods. Nazri is total BULL!!! If they did inform, how was it done? Were the District Police Stations informed, were the District Hospitals and Fire Rescue Service informed, were the District Office informed, were the Penghulus informed, were the Pengerusi JKKK and Ketua Kampung informed, where the people informed? How does the government inform the Public in affected areas in such a short period of time? PROVE IT!!!

May be, in certain areas, the public were informed by the Sistem Amaran Banjir at the rivers, where a siren will sound when the water levels rise above the danger levels. But does the Sistem Amaran Banjir is put all along populated areas of the river? Is it in sound working conditions? Look what happend to TTDI Jaya in Shah Alam. The bloody siren didnt sound because of a malfunction. DUH!!!

Then, you have Nazri saying that they have informed the public and that the public were reluctant to move. Then, you say that you did not have time to inform the Information Ministry... HELLO!!! The information Ministry is one of the most important ministry to inform the public on such an occasion. What the hell were you thinking? You are a minister... or should i say... How did a minister in charge of parliment got to know about it first, before the minsiter of information? Who informed you Nazri? Minister of Science? Then he should have the Minister of Information's mobile number on speed dial.

If you did not have time to inform the Information Ministry to disseminate the information thru media and thru the Penerangan Offices in states and districts, how did you inform the public? Penerangan Offices have vehicles with loudhailers to go round to inform the public la... Polis and Bomba pun ada jugak... If you did not inform penerangan, did you get to inform the Police, District office, JKR, Penghulu, Ketua Kampung, JKKK before you informed the Information Ministry and the media?

I asked a number of people affected by the floods... they were not informed on the 1st wave. So Nazri... no wait... Government, please explain what is the procedure of a Disaster Effort. I hope someone, may be the PAC will investigate this and correct what is wrong.

The government should take note on the comments made by the public. Not discard them away, or worse, deny what has happened. Admit your mistakes and rectify them. We all know that the machinery within the government sucks... and you have not learned from the tsunami disaster relief. The people are not against the government, they want to improve the government's delivery system... but sadly... the government is not hearing....

WISHING EVERYONE A HAPPY NEW YEAR AND MAY THE COMING YEAR BRINGS US TO GREATER SUCCESS

2007 is a year of celebration for Malaysia. Its Visit Malaysia Year and we're celebrating our 50th Year of Independence

Looking back at 2006, I have gone through may challenges in life. It has however, made me wiser and more matured. I have learned a lot in the journey through 2006. From work, friends and relationships. I do have some regrets, but I plan to mend them immediately.

Greatest Achievement in 2006 - I found the love of my life :)

Greatest Disappointment in 2006 - Neglected my work; which is very important to me and some others :(

Well, 2007 will hopefully bring a lot of changes in my life... and that is what I am going to concentrate on... ME :) and the theme for 2007 is... "MY LIFE... GETTING BACK ON TRACK & FLYING HIGH". In short, 2007 is about putting my life in order...

There are three parts to this. ME, YOU and SOCIETY.

First is Me, as a person. - This is where self improvement comes in. I plan to improve myself, in all aspects possible. Mainly in areas of Religion, Knowledge, Work, Health, Finance and some others. I want to do some soul searching as well. Its time for a reality check for me. I wanna see what I have accomplished and what I have not accomplished. I wanna reorganise and re-chart my flight path on where I wanna go and what I want to achieve in the short, medium and long term.

Second is You, the people related to me. - This is where I plan to improve my relationships with others. Which includes Parents, My Girlfriend, Family, Extended Family, Business Partners, Friends, Colleagues and others which have a significant impact on me, directly or indirectly. This is where I intend to mend some relationships which were not very successful or in which I have neglected over the past year(s) and to improve and strengthen the relationships that are currently strong. This means spending more time with all the above listed... I dunno how I'm gonna do that :

Third is Society, as a whole. - There are two parts to this. One is my relationship and contact with society as a whole, in which may not have a significant impact on me, directly or indirectly. And the other will be concentration will be on Corporate Social Responsibility. Things that I will do for the Community and Society as a whole... Community Service Programs that I will be involved in 2007. I will only concentrate on a few programs that I have been working on the past couple of years. Its more of a follow-ups for me this year and planting seeds for 2008 and beyond... so don't expect hard core programs from me this year.

As I have concentrated more on the Third part in 2006, I will put more emphasis on the First and Second part in 2007. Therefore, I shall reduce the CSR programs that I will be involved in 2007. This year is gonna be a serious year for me, more challenges and more responsibilities. I hope I can achieve what I want to achieve this year. I will hopefully draw up a Balanced Score Card for 2007 with a Quarterly Review so that I will be on track this year. I am more than sure that H will be the driving force and motivation for me in 2007. I am very happy to be able to share part of 2006 with her and I look forward to be with her and to share my life with her... not just for 2007 but for ever and ever and ever.... :)

I think it is also symbolic where the New Year coincides with Hari Raya Korban. It is my first time doing the Korban at the surau near my home. Typically, I do it in Kampung... Its a different experience...

The surau scheduled the Majlis Korban today to allow people to celebrate Hari Raya and go Berhari Raya yesterday. I think this model works as we had 7 Cows to Korban and we need not rush to cut and distribute the meat. It also in a way prolonged the AidilAdha celebrations... which is supposed to be for 4days anyway...

For me, it is good to start the new year with a Korban, and I hope that it will bring me closer to God. InsyaAllah. Its a good start... Its a good feeling and I have smiles all day long today... :) Alhamdulillah.

On another note, my heart goes to the people affected by the Floods around the country, especially the ones in Johor. My granddad is also a flood victim, together with some other family members around Johor. I am currently doing some investigation on the floods and will come up with a post soon.

I am grateful to God for allowing us to go through 2006 and I thank you God for the achievements that we have accomplished and the learning that we have got. I thank God for the life that He has given us, and I pray that He will grant us a long, prosperous and successful life. I pray to God to give us guidance and strength in going through the coming year and may God grant our wishes and make us a better person. May God Bless Us All... Amin.

Urgent Appeal for Adik Mohd Syazwan Johari, 3 years old

Dear Friends,

I just want to highlight an urgent appeal for Mohd Syazwan Johari, 3 years old will be going to seek a very urgent cancerous right eye treatment at Wills Eye Hospital,Philadelphia, USA.He already lost his left eye due to retinablastoma. He will be accompanied by his blind mom and my colleague, Puan Fadzilah Wan, Volunteer Coordinator for MAKNA.

The trip is supposed to be funded by Ministry of Health Malaysia (for the treatment cost & lodging) and Yayasan Kebajikan Negara (for travel cost) and my organisation, The National Cancer Council MAKNA (for daily stipends). We already making the arrangement with Malaysian community in Philly to help out with food and winter clothing during their stay for 18 days course of treatment.

However we received a very bad news today when Ministry of Health of Malaysia didn't approved the funding for unknown reason. He is supposed to go last Sunday 10th Dec.Now without the funding, the trip looks bleak.Still, we believe it can be done.

What they need:Funds of USD12,500 or RM50,000 for the treatment cost. The rest is covered by MAKNA and Yayasan Kebajikan Negara. Just the treatment cost.

Syazwan's parents are both blind. Syazwan and his parents rely on his sister which is still in primary school, to go to the market and do daily chores. I appeal and invite you to come forward and help. Give Syazwan a chance to live a normal life...

Lets spread the word and do what we can to save Syazwan... Insya-Allah.

Joe - All That I Am

I was reading my previous posts… the one in particular about love….

The past couple of days brought me thinking about relationships in general. Why do people get into relationships? What is the pull factor of the opposite party? Do people get into a relationship because they share the same passion and interest? Or would one be in a relationship with a partner that is completely the opposite… as the saying goes, “Opposite Attracts”? Or would they be in a relationship because they complement each other… like that movie… Jerry Maguire was it? “You Complete Me…”

I’m pretty sure that there must be some things that are in common between two people that attract one another. One might adore and respect someone for the work he/she has done. But can that be constituted as having feelings of love? The attraction can be purely platonic, such as two people share the same hobbies or interest. The commonness may also lead to an attraction of love and/or lust.

For me, attraction, affection, the magnet of love, what ever you may want to call it, does not only lie in sharing the same interests and passion. Yes! I agree that I would like my other half to share some, not all, but some of my interests and passions. At least, I will not be doing my hobbies alone… and I do have someone to talk to which understands what I like…. and understands me. I too want to share and experience the interest of my other half…

I would also want my other half to be some kind of the opposite of me, so that I can learn and embark on new things… to go on an adventure of life… to go where no one has gone before…. Who else to better do it with? My other half.. right??? :)

What makes a couple bind so strongly and can be together all their lives? To Cherish, To Love and To Hold, Till Death Do Us Part?

As for me… I need not look far too…. I live with my parents… They have been together over 35years… they are a very happy couple…. And they don’t really share the same interest and passion… do there are common things that they share…. I dare to say that they are also somewhat opposite in character…. But they complete each other… and the most important thing is…. They love one another and they love me! :)


I remember my visit to Kuala Krai a few months back. I was visiting a cancer patient’s Home. Patient lives with her husband in a rundown PPRT house they proudly call home. Patient suffers from Breast CA and is mute. Husband is also mute and is partially paralysed due to a stroke recently and still recovering. They have a child whom is currently in KL working. When I arrived at their home, both of them welcomed us with open hands and hearts. I could see that in their expression. They seem to be a very loving couple… considering that both of them are mute and they are recovering from their illness. The patient’s husband was working as a rubber tapper before the stroke. With little money in hand, they had to travel to HUSMKK every couple of week for C/T treatment. Its amazing isn’t it…. With a rundown home, both being mute, suffering from their separate illnesses, with minimal income… they are happy living together as husband and wife…

What made them attracted to each other? What made them be together all this while? Through thick and thin… Be it married couples, people in relationships, people just getting or planning to be in a relationship…. There’s a lot to be learned from this couple. Well… it definitely caught my attention after I visited them…


This brings me to the lyrics of a song:

I’ve yet to watch the famous movie “CINTA”. I hadn’t had a chance to watch it at the cinema… I guess… I will have to wait until the Original VCD/DVD comes out… I’ve been watching the advert on TV though…. And I kinda like the quote…

“Kadang-kadang, orang yang paling kita sayanglah yang paling susah untuk di sayangi. Bukan senang nak dapat teman hidup yang sanggup terima buruk baik kita, sanggup berkorban untuk kita, sanggup hidup bersama sampai ke akhir hayat…”


“Kita sayang sangat kat dia… Awak tau tak? Perasaan dia bila kita jumpa orang tu… Pastu kita terus tahu… yang dialah teman hidup kita… Awak tau tak???”

Below is the excerps of the speech by YAB Dato' Seri Abdullah Hj Ahmad Badawi at the NSTP-PwC Malaysia Humanitarian Award Presentation Ceremony 2006.

1. THANK YOU FOR INVITING ME TO SAY A FEW WORDS AT THE NSTP-PWC HUMANITARIAN AWARDS PRESENTATION. I AM INDEED HONOURED TO BE IN SUCH EXALTED COMPANY – AMONG INDIVIDUALS WHO HAVE DEVOTED THEIR HEARTS AND MINDS, THEIR BODIES AND SOULS TO THE SERVICE OF HUMANITY.

2. BY THEIR VERY NATURE, HUMANITARIANS PLACE THE WELL-BEING OF OTHERS ABOVE ALL ELSE AND THEY THEREFORE DO NOT COVET FAME OR REWARD. THIS DOES NOT MEAN THAT THEIR CONTRIBUTIONS SHOULD GO UNNOTICED OR THAT THEIR SACRIFICES SHOULD GO UNACKNOWLEDGED. SOCIETY IS ALL THE RICHER BECAUSE OF THE SHINING EXAMPLES THAT THEY SET. I AM SURE THE ORGANISERS WOULD AGREE WITH ME THAT THESE AWARDS ARE NOT MEANT TO GLORIFY, BUT TO EDIFY.

3. AS I UNDERSTAND IT, THE HUMANITARIANS THAT HAVE BEEN NOMINATED SPAN A WIDE ARRAY OF DEEDS AND CONTRIBUTIONS. YOUNG AND OLD, INDIVIDUALS AND ORGANIZATIONS – THE COMMON DENOMINATOR IS THAT THEY HAVE DISTINGUISHED THEMSELVES BY HELPING OTHERS. INCLUDED AMONG THE NOMINEES ARE THOSE WHO HAVE CONSISTENTLY DEVOTED THEMSELVES TO CARE FOR THE LESS FORTUNATE. OTHERS HAVE HARNESSED THE PHILANTHROPY OF THE PUBLIC FOR WORTHY CAUSES. SOME HAVE, THROUGH THEIR ACTS OF COURAGE AND CONCERN, HAVE SAVED AND CHANGED LIVES.

4. WHATEVER THE SHAPE OR FORM OF THEIR ACTS OF HUMANITARIANISM, I DO NOT ENVY DATO’ PAUL LEONG AND HIS PANEL OF JUDGES. BASED ON WHAT I HAVE SEEN, ALL OF THE NOMINEES HAVE PERFORMED STERLING SERVICE TO THE COMMUNITY AND IN MY EYES, ALL ARE WINNERS. I SHOULD ADD THAT ALL THE DILIGENCE THAT HAS GONE INTO THE SELECTION PROCESS WILL BE WORTHWHILE IF FELLOW MALAYSIANS ARE INSPIRED TO FOLLOW IN THE FOOTSTEPS OF THOSE WHO HAVE BEEN NOMINATED TONIGHT. AT THE VERY LEAST, IF THESE AWARDS CAN INSPIRE ORDINARY MALAYSIANS TO AT LEAST GIVE A LITTLE TIME AND THOUGHT TO THE LESS FORTUNATE, THEN THESE AWARDS WOULD HAVE MADE A PROFOUND DIFFERENCE.

5. WE IN MALAYSIA CAN CONSIDER OURSELVES LUCKY. OUR COUNTRY HAS ENJOYED POLITICAL STABILITY ALMOST CONTINUOUSLY FOR FIVE DECADES, ALTHOUGH WE CANNOT TAKE THIS BLESSING FOR GRANTED AND MUST CONSTANTLY WORK AT PRESERVING IT. OUR EFFORTS TO COMBAT POVERTY HAVE BEEN ACKNOWLEDGED BY THE UNITED NATIONS AS ONE OF THE MOST SUCCESSFUL PROGRAMS OF ITS KIND ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD. BY AND LARGE, WE ARE FREE FROM THE MASSIVE NATURAL DISASTERS THAT RAVAGE MANY COUNTRIES IN OUR REGION, ALTHOUGH THE TSUNAMI TWO YEARS AGO WAS A SOBERING WAKE-UP CALL AGAINST COMPLACENCY.

6. THIS RELATIVE STATE OF GRACE HAS ENABLED US TO DEVELOP THIS COUNTRY IN A CONSISTENT AND SUSTAINED MANNER. THE FRUITS OF OUR LABOUR ARE CLEAR FOR ALL TO SEE. ALMOST EVERYWHERE WE TURN, ESPECIALLY IN URBAN SETTINGS SUCH AS THIS, THE MONUMENTS OF OUR PROGRESS BEAR TESTAMENT TO HOW SUCCESSFUL MALAYSIA HAS BECOME.

7. BUT THE TRAPPINGS OF OUR ACHIEVEMENTS SHOULD NOT BLIND US TO THE FACT THAT THERE ARE STILL THOSE IN OUR COUNTRY WHO ARE IN NEED OF ASSISTANCE. THERE ARE STILL PARTS OF THE COUNTRY THAT HAVE NOT FULLY BENEFITED FROM OUR STRONG ECONOMIC GROWTH, JUST AS THERE ARE PORTIONS OF SOCIETY WHO STILL REQUIRE A HELPING HAND.

8. OF COURSE, THE PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITY TO PROVIDE FOR AND IMPROVE THE WELFARE OF THE PEOPLE LIES WITH THE GOVERNMENT. AND IN THIS REGARD, WE WILL NOT REST IN ENHANCING THE QUALITY OF LIFE OF THE MALAYSIAN PEOPLE. HOWEVER, THE FACT THAT THERE ARE THOSE WHO ARE WILLING TO STEP UP TO HELP THEIR FELLOW CITIZENS IS PROOF OF THE GENEROSITY OF SPIRIT THAT UNDERPINS MALAYSIAN SOCIETY. IT IS ALMOST SECONDARY THAT THEIR EFFORTS COMPLEMENT AND SUPPLEMENT GOVERNMENT INITIATIVES AND THAT THEY HELP TO SHOULDER THE HEAVY TASK. MORE IMPORTANTLY, THEIR CARE AND CONCERN FOR THEIR LESS FORTUNATE FELLOW MALAYSIANS, FORM THE GLUE THAT BINDS US TOGETHER AS A COMMUNITY. THESE ARE THE PEOPLE WHO REPRESENT THE ESSENCE OF MALAYSIA, RATHER THAN THE SHAMEFUL DISPLAYS OF APATHY THAT ARE BECOMING MORE APPARENT IN MODERN SOCIETY.

9. THEIR GENEROSITY MAKES ME OPTIMISTIC THAT THE QUEST FOR MATERIAL COMFORTS HAS NOT EXTINGUISHED OUR CAPACITY FOR COMPASSION AND DECENCY. MALAYSIA AND MALAYSIANS HAVE ALWAYS ANSWERED THE CALL OF HUMANITARIAN DUTY TO THE BEST OF OUR ABILITIES. WHETHER IN ACEH, PAKISTAN OR LEBANON, IT IS A SOURCE OF PRIDE THAT OUR CITIZENS ARE AMONG THE FIRST ON THE SCENE WHENEVER DISASTER STRIKES. THIS IS A TRADITION THAT I HOPE CONTINUES LONG INTO THE FUTURE.

10. ON A SEPARATE NOTE, I AM ALSO PLEASED THAT MANY OF OUR CHARITABLE ORGANISATIONS DO NOT JUST HAND OUT ALMS BUT HAVE GONE A STEP FURTHER BY WORKING TO EMPOWER THE HAVE-NOTS. WHILE WE APPLAUD THE NOBLE ACTS OF GIVING AID TO THOSE IN NEED, I FIRMLY BELIEVE THAT THE CAPACITY BUILDING ASPECT OF HUMANITARIAN WORK IS EQUALLY IMPORTANT. TANGIBLE AID LIKE MONEY, EQUIPMENT AND OTHER GOODS MAY BE HELPFUL DURING EMERGENCIES OR DURING CRISIS SITUATIONS. IN THE LONG RUN, HOWEVER, IT IS BEST THAT PEOPLE ARE GIVEN THE TOOLS TO HELP THEM REALIZE THEIR POTENTIAL. EVERYONE HAS THE ABILITY TO GROW AND BLOSSOM IF GIVEN THE PROPER GUIDANCE AND THE RIGHT OPPORTUNITIES.

11. BEFORE I END, I WOULD LIKE TO OFFER MY CONGRATULATIONS TO THE NSTP GROUP AND PRICEWATERHOUSECOOPERS FOR ORGANIZING THESE AWARDS. I WOULD ALSO LIKE TO RECORD MY APPRECIATION TO ALL THE INDIVIDUALS AND ORGANIZATIONS WHO HAVE CONTRIBUTED THEIR TIME AND ENERGY TO ENSURE THAT THIS EVENT IS A SUCCESS.

12. OF COURSE, MY HEARTFELT CONGRATULATIONS AND GRATITUDE GOES TO ALL THE AWARD NOMINEES AND RECIPIENTS. I HOPE THAT THE RECOGNITION GIVEN TO YOU TONIGHT MARKS A NEW BEGINNING IN YOUR NOBLE EFFORTS TO WORK FOR THE BETTERMENT OF SOCIETY. MALAYSIA IS A BETTER PLACE BECAUSE OF YOUR GOOD WORK.

13. MANY YEARS AGO, AS A YOUNG BOY IN SCHOOL, I LEARNED SOME WORDS OF WISDOM THAT HAVE STAYED WITH ME ALL THIS TIME. IF MEMORY SERVES ME CORRECTLY, IT GOES LIKE THIS: “I EXPECT TO PASS THROUGH THE WORLD BUT ONCE. ANY GOOD THEREFORE THAT I CAN DO, OR ANY KINDNESS I CAN SHOW TO ANY CREATURE, LET ME DO IT NOW. LET ME NOT DEFER IT, FOR I SHALL NOT PASS THIS WAY AGAIN.” I HAVE ALWAYS BELIEVED THAT THESE ARE WORDS THAT WOULD SERVE HUMANKIND WELL AND IT IS A CREDO THAT I HAVE TRIED TO LIVE BY. IT IS ALSO A CREDO THAT THE NOMINEES FOR THIS AWARD EXHIBIT EXEMPLIFY MAGNIFICENTLY. MAY WE CONTINUE TO BE MOVED TO SHOW KINDNESS ALWAYS.

Early Detection is great but why risk getting cancer in the first place? You can greatly reduce your chances of developing cancer simply by limiting your risk factors such as:

1. Smoking
2. Dipping snuff or chewing tobacco
3. A high-fat diet
4. Being overweight
5. A low fibre diet
6. Alcohol abuse
7. Inadequate amounts of certain vitamins and minerals
8. Exposure to environmental and occupational cancer causing substances in air and water
9. Overexposure to the sun
10. Too much radiation frm various sources
11. Having too much stress

How Safe Are The Safe Deposit Boxes?

Are the safe deposit boxes in banks safe enough?

Are the strong room in the banks strong enough?

Over the Deepavali & Raya holidays, the strong room of a bank was broken into and it took more than 12 hours before the alarm kicked in. 92 safe deposit boxes were compromised. Depositors get a mere RM10,000 for the loss of goods.

This is not the first time where a bank's strong room has been compromised. It happend before 11 years ago... What attracted me was a comment by one of the depositors, "Kalau bank pun sudah tak selamat, mana lagi saya mau simpan?" hahahaha!!!

So can the banks and its security system be trusted? Thinking about it, the incident recently, there's much room for improvement. For one, the bank tak de CCTV at the upper floors, the alarm didnt function, the CMS didnt work.

I would like to suggest that Police District Headquarters offer safe deposit box services. In theory, if the strong room is in the Police Station, it should be safe. There are Police Officer armed with either a 9mm side arm or a styer or a M16 at the station at all times. The Police Station is also open 24hrs a day, 7 Days a week and also opens during festivities. It would then be fairly difficult for the socalled "Tunnel Rat Gang" to bust into a police station (unless its an inside job la). Kalau inside job and the strong room in an IPD is compromised, then there is something very serious that's going on in the police force and you can always ask the government to establish a Royal Commission :) hehehe. Lagipun, Customers can have access to their belongings 24 hours a day, as opposed to banking hours only. It would also be added income to the Government.

How many of us are willing to use the safe deposit boxes if the service is provided by the Police? Well, its something to think about....

Over the past few days of Hari Raya, I have been exchanging Raya greetings via sms, and I'm sure most of you do it as well.... What happened to the traditional Hari Raya Cards by post?? Hmm.... well, I do still send them to a few people.... but majoritily, Greetings are by SMS :)
